~ * * * ~
So, when he’d met her, he’d thought she was pretty, sure. And she was, with her long, straight, black hair, big brown eyes and curves in the right places under their school uniform. However, she was the sickest girl he’d ever met. Higarashi Kagome seemed to be ill at least once a week and was absent more days than she was present.
During the first day of the second term, when she’d missed school yet again, Hojo-kun decided to visit his obviously ill classmate. When he got there, he was gobsmacked. It was a genuine Shinto shrine, and evidently the entire family worked to keep it running. The first person on the property that he saw was a young boy who possessed the same eyes and hair as Higarashi-san.
He was soon acquainted with the young boy, who was Kagome-san’s younger brother, Souta, and he found himself visiting the Higarashi shrine at least once a week from that point on. His friends began to tease him about having a crush on Kagome-san, and he let them believe that, but he spent a majority of the time at the shrine watching her brother perform duties and such from behind the rather large tree in the courtyard.
After a few years of being classmates with Kagome-san, Hojo found graduation from high school right around the corner with a heavy heart. His parents had already gotten him accepted into a nice technical college in Kyoto, and he wouldn’t be able to visit the Higarashi shrine, and Souta, anymore. Two days before graduation, his friends were trying to get him to ask Kagome-san out for a second date—their first having occurred in their first year—but he told them to stop asking about it.
He was beyond Kagome now. He’d been secretly wondering how it would be to kiss the soft, pink lips of another Higarashi for months now. Not that Hojo had told the boy that. He had only just entered middle school, and it was far from appropriate.
And so, he went to Kyoto, and Higarashi Kagome and her brother slowly passed from the mind of Hojo-kun as he threw himself into living up to the expectations of those around him. However, his dreams never let him forget the young boy with eyes that shone with golden flecks.
