After fighting, and losing, a war, she’d been tired. However, the discovery that her struggle wasn’t over felt daunting. She was hardly twenty years old, but felt at least twice that with everything that had happened in her short life—she’d followed and loved a man with great ideals, lost her sense of self in his cause before losing him, and finally found herself raising his long-lost daughter.

Not that she would trade Mariemaia for the world. The bright, adorable child was the last fragile, yet tangible hold she had with her beloved Treize. She would make the world burn to keep the little imp safe, happy, and loved. And for that, she needed help.

A year after getting the child into her custody, she sent a message to the one person who would understand her more than anyone else.

Vice-Foreign Minister Darlian…

She was not yet eighteen, but she was now the most influential woman in the world, Lady Une not included. She had seen her beloved (adopted) father taken from her and had found—and lost—her older brother, Milliardo. She had fallen into infatuation with the hero of the rebellion against Oz, Romefeller and the other old establishments, and learned that he had become enamoured with another of the Gundam pilots, the one who he’d fought during the brief Eve War.

Of course, there were the rumours that Chang Wufei had been involved with Treize Khushrenada for more things than just revenge before the general met his untimely end at the hands of his Chinese foe. Although, if that was true, Relena could see why he’d lost a part of himself after the end of the war and had taken up with Dekim Barton.

No, what Relena really found tiresome was the way she was hounded by the press about the fact that she and Lady Une were gradually spending more and more time with each other. Why shouldn’t they? They were both young, powerful, wise beyond their years, and forced to enforce the rules of the Earth Sphere so that another war with the colonies didn’t occur. Why wouldn’t they find themselves cloistered together a lot? They were the perfect complement to one another—the pacifist and the activist, working side-by-side to ensure the peace that had been gained at so high a price endured.

So what if they sought another sort of refuge with one another? That was no one’s business. Nor was it important to what they both wished to accomplish. It was just…stress relief. Especially if she ignored the way her heart raced as the other woman knocked on the door to her private chambers.

“Good evening, Lady Une,” she whispered coyly before she was wrapped in a lithe, sweet embrace that lasted all evening.
